I’ve had countless opportunities to
start this blog over the last 3-4 years. It’s kind of funny that this blog
starts after one of the most heart-breaking games of my life. I am an avid sports
observer and a die-hard fan of my teams—the Los Angeles Angels, UCLA Bruins,
San Antonio Spurs, and above all, Dallas Cowboys.
Over the last few (rather eventful)
seasons of my sports franchises, I have felt a great urge to write following
some of the more critical games, yet I never actually did. I love to write, but
more than that, I love to think. I love to dissect sports and put things into
historical context.
I understand that sports are just
athletics and entertainment, but to me, sports are important. I don’t mean to
say that getting out and exercising and being healthy is important, I genuinely
feel that professional and collegiate sports are of substance in the history of
the world. Devotion to one’s teams incite fights, riots, and wars; it also
bring strangers that are worlds apart, together.
The last
time I felt the appetite to start this blog was in the summer of 2014 after the
San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Finals and, in my eyes, saved the Association.
That
event was so impactful on my life that I actually stood in a crowded bar with
tears of joy streaming down my face as time ran out and the Spurs were crowned
champions.
After a
few days, I let the initial euphoric feelings I fostered come down a bit and I
sat and wrote down what that title meant to me and, more importantly, to the
NBA. At this point, however, that article does not strike me as relevant and I
don’t feel it is appropriate to post. Maybe come playoff time, as the Spurs
look to defend their title, I will revisit it.
As great
as that moment was for me, it still didn’t lead me to the blogosphere. The
moment that helped bring this about was the unexpected exit of my Dallas
Cowboys from the NFL Playoffs.
As high
as my emotions were following the Spurs’ win, I was exponentially lower after
my Cowboys were sent home.
And so I
sat on my bed feeling just as defeated as Tony Romo and DeMarco Murray and I
realized that this feeling was equally as important as the feelings I had
following that NBA Title seven months prior. That realization was a key factor
in starting this project.
Still,
the greatest factor, without a doubt, has been the support and (mildly
forceful) encouragement of my friends and family. You wouldn’t believe how many
times over the last few years I have heard the phrases “you should write about
that,” or “you need to start a blog” coming out of the mouths of not only the
people I’m around on a daily basis, but also those who I have seen only
occasionally. You can only hear about how you are wasting your talents so many
times before you realize you are wasting your talents. God, I hope I have a
talent for this.
My
friends know me. They know my passion for my teams runs deep. They know my
passion for sports runs deep. They know I have a lot to say about a lot of
things, and they know I will be a lot lees annoying if I tell it to the
computer rather than to them. But above all, they know that this is what I want
to do with my life. Thanks friends!
Ideally I
would love to make a career out of this but I have no quarrels with doing this
for talking points with my friends and whoever my readership becomes.
I don’t
plan on posting daily. I don’t want to give you every score and box score from
around the country every night. I plan on giving you my subjective views on
some of the more impactful events in my sports life. Maybe throw in some non-sports
subjects every now and then.
I hope that
both you and I enjoy this ride for a long time. Here we go…
